<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Junk journaling is a fun, relaxed, and super creative way to turn everyday bits and pieces into something meaningful. At its heart, it’s all about self-expression, storytelling, and giving new life to things that might otherwise be tossed away. Think of it as part scrapbook, part art journal, and part diary—all rolled into one. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Junk journaling Papers</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of using a regular notebook, junk journals are made up of all sorts of interesting or &#8220;saved&#8221; papers and materials. You might find old book pages, tea dyed paper, envelopes, maps, receipts, wrapping paper, postcards, or even fabric tucked inside. Basically, if you can glue it, sew it, or stick it in—it&#8217;s fair game! This mix of textures and colours is what makes junk journals so unique and full of personality.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The &#8216;Junk&#8217; in Journaling</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The “junk” part isn’t about rubbish—it’s about reusing and repurposing. It’s that satisfying feeling of looking at something ordinary, like a paper bag or an old ticket, and thinking, “I can do something with that!” It’s creative, resourceful, and a great way to be a little more mindful about waste.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What rules?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the things people love most about junk journaling is just how interactive it can be. These aren’t just flat pages—you can add pockets, tuck spots, flip-outs, tags, and little hidden notes. You can tuck away quotes, memories, photos, or even bits you like the look of. It turns your journal into something you explore, not just read.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are absolutely no rules, which is a big part of the appeal. You can use your junk journal however you like. Some people write in theirs like a diary, others focus more on the arty side with collage and layering. A lot of people do a mix of both. You might create a themed journal—like vintage, travel, nature, or something whimsical—or just let it evolve as you go.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/9a773b50-c15b-49b6-aff0-8d7757386fec-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-16998" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/9a773b50-c15b-49b6-aff0-8d7757386fec-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/9a773b50-c15b-49b6-aff0-8d7757386fec-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/9a773b50-c15b-49b6-aff0-8d7757386fec-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/9a773b50-c15b-49b6-aff0-8d7757386fec-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/9a773b50-c15b-49b6-aff0-8d7757386fec-1400x1050.jpg 1400w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/9a773b50-c15b-49b6-aff0-8d7757386fec-800x600.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/9a773b50-c15b-49b6-aff0-8d7757386fec.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Pockets and Journal cards</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Making the journal itself can be just as enjoyable as filling it. Some people love binding their own books using simple stitches, while others prefer to use a pre-made notebook and build from there. Either way works perfectly. The idea is to keep it easy and enjoyable, not perfect.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not sure of what to collect? Download our <a href="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/junk_journaling_supplies.pdf">free list</a> of what to collect for junk journaling</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that’s another lovely thing about <a href="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/hibernating-with-mixed-media-art/" type="post" id="16889">junk journaling</a>—it’s very forgiving. There’s no such thing as a mistake. If something doesn’t look quite right, you can cover it, layer over it, or just embrace it as part of the page. It takes the pressure off and lets you just play and experiment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you love colour, texture, and a bit of laid-back style, a mixed-media boho journal is a super fun project. It’s part art piece, part personal keepsake—and unique. Here’s a simple guide to creating your own.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Gather Your Goodies</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gather a variety of papers, including old book pages, scrapbook scraps, watercolour sheets, and coffee or tea-dyed papers. You can also use brown paper bags if you like their appearance. For the spine of your project, select some decorative beads—these can be wood, glass, or ceramic. Additionally, make sure to have some waxed linen thread or a strong cord on hand.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/d0606b73-83fe-43c2-b817-bf318c878241-1024x768.jpg" alt="map pages, tea dyed paper, digital prints, scrapbook paper all work great in a boho journal" class="wp-image-16945" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/d0606b73-83fe-43c2-b817-bf318c878241-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/d0606b73-83fe-43c2-b817-bf318c878241-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/d0606b73-83fe-43c2-b817-bf318c878241-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/d0606b73-83fe-43c2-b817-bf318c878241-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/d0606b73-83fe-43c2-b817-bf318c878241-1400x1050.jpg 1400w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/d0606b73-83fe-43c2-b817-bf318c878241-800x600.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/d0606b73-83fe-43c2-b817-bf318c878241.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">map pages, tea dyed paper, music paper, digital prints, scrapbook paper</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Play with the Pages</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boho style is all about mix and match, so don’t worry about perfect edges or matching colours. You can also tear your paper instead of cutting it for a more relaxed vibe. Stitching little fabric scraps right onto the pages adds a lovely handmade touch.</p>

</figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Craft the Cover</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use thick chipboard, recycled cardboard, or an old book cover for the base. My go-to is 2-3mm bookboard. I also save all the hardboard backings from watercolour or sketch pads I buy. These are great for book covers. Wrap it in fabric or patterned paper and rough it up a bit if you like a worn-in look. You can add lace, dried flowers, or a few charms for personality, then seal it with a matte medium if you used paper, or Scotchgard if using fabric to protect your work without losing the texture.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="926" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-1024x926.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-16899" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-1024x926.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-300x271.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-768x695.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-1536x1389.jpg 1536w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-1400x1266.jpg 1400w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-800x723.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Bead That Spine</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The beaded spine on the boho journal is the real showstopper. Punch holes along the spine edge of your cover and folded page sets (called signatures). Sew them together with pamphlet stitch, slipping beads onto the thread as you go. Mix big and small beads for a cool, eclectic feel. Add charms with bulb pins for boho flair.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Finishing Touches</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Slide in pockets or envelopes to hold tags or journal cards. Wrap a ribbon or leather strip around the whole thing to keep it closed and add to the free-spirited look. The best part of a boho journal is that nothing has to be perfect. Every bead, brushstroke, and scrap is a piece of your own creative story—making a journal that’s as individual as you are.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This winter, I’ve been in full hibernation mode – not in the “hibernate and binge-watch every TV series known to humankind” kind of way (though, let’s be honest, there <em>may</em> have been a few cosy movie nights curled up with the dog in there), but in the creative, cocooning kind of way with mixed media art. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Paint and Paper</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the world outside shivered, I curled up in my creative cave with paint, paper and glue. Winter became my excuse to slow down, layer textures, splash colours, and get delightfully messy with mixed media. My little corner became my happy place. Jars of brushes ready to go, scraps of paper waiting to be collaged, paint-splattered pages drying in uneven piles. Once I sat down, the rest of the world faded away.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="926" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-1024x926.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-16899" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-1024x926.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-300x271.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-768x695.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-1536x1389.jpg 1536w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-1400x1266.jpg 1400w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0-800x723.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/17e484c4-0333-42d4-a124-5751a73db2c0.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">New journal with beaded spine and fabric cover</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Diving into Mixed Media Magic</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This season was all about mixed <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BR.AiArt">media magic</a> – layering paints, tearing and gluing papers, stamping, stencilling, and letting a bit of vintage charm creep in with old book pages, lace trims, and coffee-dyed paper. Every so often, a bead or button would sneak in for a surprise sparkle.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s something about winter that seems to make creativity feel deeper. The slower pace gives me permission to linger over a piece without rushing to finish. I can build up layers over days, letting paint dry naturally, watching colours shift as they settle. Some projects have been full of bold, bright energy – little rebellions against grey skies – while others have been softer and moodier, reflecting the quiet, introspective nature of the season.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Playing with New Techniques and Happy Accidents</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hibernating has also given me time to explore new techniques. I’ve tried gel prints, playing with texture pastes, and creating layered backgrounds. I’ve rediscovered the joy of making “happy accidents” – those unplanned moments where paint runs in the wrong direction, or glue leaves an unexpected mark, but somehow it makes the piece even better.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/b084e93d-5eaa-4b65-9fb0-78c61644d4bb-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-16894" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/b084e93d-5eaa-4b65-9fb0-78c61644d4bb-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/b084e93d-5eaa-4b65-9fb0-78c61644d4bb-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/b084e93d-5eaa-4b65-9fb0-78c61644d4bb-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/b084e93d-5eaa-4b65-9fb0-78c61644d4bb-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/b084e93d-5eaa-4b65-9fb0-78c61644d4bb-1400x1050.jpg 1400w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/b084e93d-5eaa-4b65-9fb0-78c61644d4bb-800x600.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/b084e93d-5eaa-4b65-9fb0-78c61644d4bb.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">I found a love of grids, watercolour backgrounds with black and white pens, creating Zentology tangles</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ready to Emerge: Spring is on Its Way</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now spring is tiptoeing in. Tiny buds on branches, a little warmth in the breeze – and I’m ready to step out of my creative cave. I’ve got a stack of finished work, including three new journals and a head full of ideas, and (let’s be real) paint permanently under my nails.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="659" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/22afe99a-aee4-43b1-adf4-69be87e4802e_inPixio-1024x659.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-16893" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/22afe99a-aee4-43b1-adf4-69be87e4802e_inPixio-1024x659.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/22afe99a-aee4-43b1-adf4-69be87e4802e_inPixio-300x193.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/22afe99a-aee4-43b1-adf4-69be87e4802e_inPixio-768x494.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/22afe99a-aee4-43b1-adf4-69be87e4802e_inPixio-1536x989.jpg 1536w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/22afe99a-aee4-43b1-adf4-69be87e4802e_inPixio-1400x901.jpg 1400w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/22afe99a-aee4-43b1-adf4-69be87e4802e_inPixio-800x515.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/22afe99a-aee4-43b1-adf4-69be87e4802e_inPixio.jpg 1957w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Ai backgrounds, collage, hidden pockets and a belly band with tags</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The best part? I’m carrying that slow, easy creative rhythm into the new season. Winter wasn’t just about keeping warm – it gave me the space to play, experiment, and let my art grow naturally. Here’s to winter for the quiet magic, and to spring for the chance to share it all.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s something pretty special about having birds flitting around your backyard. Whether it’s the cheerful warble of a magpie in the morning or the flash of colour from a rosella darting through the trees, birds bring life and joy to our gardens. And one of the easiest ways to invite more feathered friends into your yard is with a good old bird bath.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It looks great nestled among your plants and gives <a href="https://ebird.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> a spot to drink, splash about, and cool off—especially on those scorching Aussie summer days. In this post, we’ll walk through why a bird bath is a top addition to any garden, how to pick the right one, where to pop it, how to keep it clean, and a few extra tips for making your backyard a proper bird haven.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Why Bother with a Bird Bath?</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s start with the basics. Birds, just like us, need water. In many parts of Australia, especially when things dry out or during drought, natural water sources can be hard to come by. That’s where your bird bath comes in.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="771" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runyv_tz14CpEI_a_bird_bath_with_a_magpie_wit_c1f7921b-0913-4bb6-8c73-c7087f695638_0-1024x771.png" alt="magpie in a bird bath" class="wp-image-16863" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runyv_tz14CpEI_a_bird_bath_with_a_magpie_wit_c1f7921b-0913-4bb6-8c73-c7087f695638_0-1024x771.png 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runyv_tz14CpEI_a_bird_bath_with_a_magpie_wit_c1f7921b-0913-4bb6-8c73-c7087f695638_0-300x226.png 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runyv_tz14CpEI_a_bird_bath_with_a_magpie_wit_c1f7921b-0913-4bb6-8c73-c7087f695638_0-768x578.png 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runyv_tz14CpEI_a_bird_bath_with_a_magpie_wit_c1f7921b-0913-4bb6-8c73-c7087f695638_0-800x603.png 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runyv_tz14CpEI_a_bird_bath_with_a_magpie_wit_c1f7921b-0913-4bb6-8c73-c7087f695638_0.png 1232w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Magpie</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">1. <strong>A Drink and a Dip</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Birds use water for drinking and bathing, which helps them keep their feathers in good shape. A quick splash helps clean off dust and any pesky mites. Clean feathers are essential for insulation and flight, so your bird bath is doing more than just offering a pit stop—it&#8217;s helping them stay healthy.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">2. <strong>Birds Galore</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pop in a bird bath, and you’ll likely start to see more birds in your garden—especially the ones that aren’t fussed about feeders but are always on the lookout for a clean puddle. You might be surprised by who drops by, from little finches and honeyeaters to bigger characters like currawongs or even cockatoos.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">3. <strong>Natural Pest Control</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Birds do a brilliant job of keeping insects in check. By giving them a reason to stick around, you’re also getting a hand with the bugs—no need to reach for the spray.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">4. <strong>It’s Just Nice, Isn’t It?</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the end of the day, having birds around is just good for the soul. Watching them hop about, preen their feathers, or take a cheeky dip is a lovely way to connect with nature, right in your own backyard.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="771" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runMBsYYXpFLfI_a_rosella_splashing_in_a_bird_cb4eecde-1c7c-41de-8d94-52eed95ee271_3-1024x771.png" alt="eastern rosella bird bath" class="wp-image-16864" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runMBsYYXpFLfI_a_rosella_splashing_in_a_bird_cb4eecde-1c7c-41de-8d94-52eed95ee271_3-1024x771.png 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runMBsYYXpFLfI_a_rosella_splashing_in_a_bird_cb4eecde-1c7c-41de-8d94-52eed95ee271_3-300x226.png 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runMBsYYXpFLfI_a_rosella_splashing_in_a_bird_cb4eecde-1c7c-41de-8d94-52eed95ee271_3-768x578.png 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runMBsYYXpFLfI_a_rosella_splashing_in_a_bird_cb4eecde-1c7c-41de-8d94-52eed95ee271_3-800x603.png 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_httpss.mj_.runMBsYYXpFLfI_a_rosella_splashing_in_a_bird_cb4eecde-1c7c-41de-8d94-52eed95ee271_3.png 1232w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Eastern Rosella</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Choosing the Right Bird Bath</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alright, now that you’re convinced, let’s talk about picking a bird bath that’ll make the local wildlife feel welcome.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">1. <strong>Material Matters</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bird baths come in all sorts of materials—stone, ceramic, metal, plastic, you name it. Stone and ceramic look beautiful and last ages, but they can be heavy. Plastic is cheap and cheerful, easy to move, but might not stand up to the harsh Aussie sun for long. Pick whatever suits your style and your garden best, just make sure it’s sturdy and safe.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">2. <strong>Shape and Depth</strong></h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Birds aren’t after a deep swimming pool—most prefer something shallow, about 2–5 cm deep. A gently sloping edge is ideal so they can wade in gradually. If it’s too steep or deep, smaller birds might steer clear.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">3. <strong>Size Does Matter</strong></h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A bigger bath can handle a few birds at once, which is a treat to watch during peak hour. But if you’ve only got a small space, don’t stress—birds aren’t too picky as long as the water’s fresh.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="771" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_lorikeet_splashing_in_a_bird_bath_bird_is_wet_and_spla_b83ff405-d962-4763-8604-2c866c77ad72_3-1024x771.png" alt="lorikeet bird bath" class="wp-image-16868" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_lorikeet_splashing_in_a_bird_bath_bird_is_wet_and_spla_b83ff405-d962-4763-8604-2c866c77ad72_3-1024x771.png 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_lorikeet_splashing_in_a_bird_bath_bird_is_wet_and_spla_b83ff405-d962-4763-8604-2c866c77ad72_3-300x226.png 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_lorikeet_splashing_in_a_bird_bath_bird_is_wet_and_spla_b83ff405-d962-4763-8604-2c866c77ad72_3-768x578.png 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_lorikeet_splashing_in_a_bird_bath_bird_is_wet_and_spla_b83ff405-d962-4763-8604-2c866c77ad72_3-800x603.png 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bevlea_lorikeet_splashing_in_a_bird_bath_bird_is_wet_and_spla_b83ff405-d962-4763-8604-2c866c77ad72_3.png 1232w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Lorikeet</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">4. <strong>Easy to Clean</strong></h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trust us on this one—you’ll want something that’s easy to clean. Look for a bath that lifts off its base or has a smooth surface so you can give it a quick scrub now and then.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Where to Put Your Bird Bath</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Location, location, location! Where you pop your bird bath can make all the difference.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">1. <strong>Nice and Visible</strong></h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Birds won’t visit if they can’t see it, so keep it out in the open where they can spot it from above. But don’t leave them totally exposed—some nearby shrubs or branches give them somewhere to perch and check the coast is clear before taking the plunge.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">2. <strong>Safe from Predators</strong></h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Keep it away from spots where cats or other predators might sneak up. No one wants to offer birds a drink and a trap at the same time.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">3. <strong>Bit of Shade</strong></h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In our hot climate, a bit of shade helps keep the water cool and slows down evaporation. A spot with morning sun and arvo shade is perfect.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">4. <strong>Close to Plants</strong></h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Placing your bath near flowering plants, shrubs, or trees makes it even more attractive. Birds love a mix of water and greenery—it’s like their version of a five-star resort.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="732" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/P2268504-ORF_DxO_DeepPRIME-1024x732.jpg" alt="lorikeet" class="wp-image-16865" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/P2268504-ORF_DxO_DeepPRIME-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/P2268504-ORF_DxO_DeepPRIME-300x214.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/P2268504-ORF_DxO_DeepPRIME-768x549.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/P2268504-ORF_DxO_DeepPRIME-770x550.jpg 770w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/P2268504-ORF_DxO_DeepPRIME-800x572.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/P2268504-ORF_DxO_DeepPRIME.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><a href="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/birds-of-australia-the-rainbow-lorikeet/">Lorikeet</a></figcaption></figure>
</div>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Keeping It Clean</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Birds like clean water (who doesn’t?), so you’ll need to give your bird bath a bit of TLC.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">1. <strong>Weekly Scrub</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once a week, tip out the water and give it a good scrub with a stiff brush. You can use a bit of white vinegar or a splash of mild dish soap—just rinse well afterward so there’s no residue.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">2. <strong>Top It Up</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Especially in summer, you’ll want to check the water daily. It can disappear quickly on a hot day, and if you’re lucky, the birds will be lining up for a dip.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">3. <strong>Winter Ready</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the cooler parts of Oz, bird baths can freeze over. If you&#8217;re in Tassie or the highlands, consider a heated bath—or just break the ice when needed so the birds can still have a drink.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">4. <strong>Mosquito Watch</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stagnant water can attract mozzies, so keep the water fresh and moving if possible. A small solar fountain or dripper does the trick and adds a bit of fun, too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’ve spent any time in Nagambie lately—strolling by the lake, having a coffee in town, or out on the farm—you’ve probably seen (and heard!) them. The cheeky white birds flying in flocks, chattering away, and sometimes causing a bit of a ruckus? Yep, those are corellas. And whether you love them or find them a bit too lively, there’s no denying they’ve made themselves at home here in our beautiful part of Victoria.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, let’s dive into the world of corellas and find out why they’ve chosen Nagambie as their hangout spot—and what that means for locals, farmers, and nature lovers alike.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Who Are These Feathered Visitors?</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Corellas are part of the cockatoo family—those bright, loud, and pretty clever birds native to Australia. In Nagambie, we mainly see two types:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Little Corellas</strong> – small, all-white birds with a splash of pink between the eyes and beak.</li>

<li><strong>Long-billed Corellas</strong> – slightly larger with a longer beak and more pink around the face and chest.</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/P9281710-Copy-1024x768.jpg" alt="Long Billed Corella

</div>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/1800-1024x768.jpg" alt="Corellas in Nagambie" class="wp-image-16849" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/1800-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/1800-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/1800-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/1800-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/1800-1400x1050.jpg 1400w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/1800-800x600.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/1800.jpg 1800w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Little Corella &#8211; Credit eBird</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They’re social birds, and by social, we mean they LOVE a crowd. It’s not uncommon to spot flocks of 50 or more wheeling around the sky or settling into trees around Lake Nagambie.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Why Nagambie?</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To be fair, why wouldn’t they like it here? There’s food, water, shelter—and plenty of open space. The lake and surrounding farmland provide the perfect setup. Native trees drop seeds, crops offer snacks, and there’s no shortage of roosting spots. It’s kind of like an all-inclusive resort for birds.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video height="720" style="aspect-ratio: 1280 / 720;" width="1280" controls src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/488900593_9445010258913393_2459815388052632405_n.mp4"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In fact, birdwatchers have recorded sightings of large corella flocks around the lake, especially early in the morning or before sunset. They’re part of the soundtrack of <a href="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/nagambie-history-vineyards-and-waterways/">Nagambie</a> now, whether we like it or not!</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">The Good, the Bad, and the Feathery</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, don’t get us wrong—corellas are fascinating. They’re intelligent, they have strong social bonds, and watching them fly in sync can be a real treat. But… they can also cause some headaches.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">The Good:</h5>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>They help spread seeds and keep insect populations in check.</li>

<li>They’re a delight for birdwatchers and nature photographers.</li>

<li>They add a bit of wild charm to our daily lives.</li>
</ul>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">The Not-So-Good:</h5>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Tree damage:</strong> Corellas love chewing. They’ll strip bark and leaves off trees, seriously damaging or killing native species.</li>

<li><strong>Farm troubles:</strong> Farmers often report corellas feasting on crops and sneaking into stored grain. They can cause real financial pain.</li>

<li><strong>Infrastructure issues:</strong> Have you ever seen a chewed-up power cable or a bent antenna? That might have been the work of a curious corella.</li>

<li><strong>Noise:</strong> Let’s say they’re not exactly quiet houseguests. Big flocks can be <em>very</em> vocal—especially at dawn.</li>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Government Help</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong><a href="https://www.wildlife.vic.gov.au/managing-wildlife/victorian-corella-strategy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Victorian Corella Strategy</a></strong> (yes, the government actually spent time on this &#8220;problem&#8221;) is in place to help towns like ours balance protecting native wildlife with reducing the impact on communities and farms. <span style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><strong><a href="https://www.wildlife.vic.gov.au/grants/corella-management-grants-program" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Corella Management Grants </a></strong>are even available to help fund local solutions, </span>like better deterrent systems or habitat changes.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">possible Legal Solutions</h5>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Changing the landscape</strong> – planting trees corellas don’t like or removing tempting food sources.</li>

<li><strong>Deterrents</strong> – things like sound devices, lights, or even scarecrows (yes, they still work sometimes!) to keep birds away from high-risk areas.</li>
</ul>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Coexisting With Corellas</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Corellas aren’t villains—they’re just doing what birds do. The challenge is figuring out how to enjoy the benefits of living close to nature while minimising the downsides. And that’s what makes Nagambie’s story so interesting. It’s not just about dealing with a bird problem. It’s about learning to live in harmony with the environment, even when it throws us a few curveballs—or, in this case, a few hundred screeching birds. </p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Looking Ahead</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next time you hear that familiar squawk overhead, take a moment to pause and appreciate it! It’s a reminder of how lucky we are to live in a place where nature is still thriving. Sure, it can be a bit noisy, but it’s definitely a sign of life all around us. Just a friendly reminder: using poison to harm wildlife is against the law under the Wildlife Act of 1975. If someone is found guilty, they could face fines of up to $18,174 and/or six months in prison.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Want to share your own corella story or photo? Or do you have a clever way of keeping them off your fruit trees? Drop a comment below—we’d love to hear how you&#8217;re dealing with our feathered locals! 🦜</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There&#8217;s something genuinely magical about autumn in the Macedon Ranges. Just an hour&#8217;s drive from Melbourne, this stunning region comes alive with vibrant colours, crisp air, and cosy country vibes. Whether you love nature, great food and wine, or just a peaceful escape, autumn here is an experience you won&#8217;t forget.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">A Breathtaking Autumn Wonderland</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;re in the right place if you&#8217;re chasing those classic autumn hues. The trees put on a spectacular show of reds, oranges, and gold, making every walk feel like a dream. Honour Avenue in Macedon is an absolute must-see—a picture-perfect tunnel of towering oak and elm trees that light up in fiery colours.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then there&#8217;s Mount Macedon, where the walking trails are even more stunning in autumn. Whether you take a stroll around Sanatorium Lake or tackle the Camels Hump hike, you&#8217;ll be rewarded with incredible views and that fresh mountain air. And if you make it to the summit? Get ready for a breathtaking panorama of rolling hills painted in autumn shades.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="527" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Untitled_Panorama1_inPixio-1024x527.jpg" alt="Autumn in the Macedon Ranges" class="wp-image-16833" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Untitled_Panorama1_inPixio-1024x527.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Untitled_Panorama1_inPixio-300x155.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Untitled_Panorama1_inPixio-768x396.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Untitled_Panorama1_inPixio-1536x791.jpg 1536w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Untitled_Panorama1_inPixio-1400x721.jpg 1400w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Untitled_Panorama1_inPixio-800x412.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Untitled_Panorama1_inPixio.jpg 1800w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Sanitorium Lake</figcaption></figure>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Stunning Country Gardens</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Macedon is home to some of Victoria&#8217;s most beautiful country gardens, and autumn is the perfect time to see them at their best. Many private gardens open their gates to the public during this season, offering a chance to wander through stunning landscapes filled with towering oaks, golden elms, and delicate maples. The historic gardens of Duneira and Bolobek are standout spots, with immaculately maintained grounds showcasing the rich colours of autumn. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My absolute favourite is Forest Glade Garden. <a href="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/autumn-in-victoria-a-guide-to-capturing-its-colours/">Forest Glade</a> in Mount Macedon is like walking through a fairytale, with Japanese maples and European trees putting on a dazzling autumn display. Or, if you&#8217;re after a quiet picnic spot, head to Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve and enjoy the serenity (plus, you can even sample the natural mineral water!).</p>

Whether you&#8217;re after a boutique stay, a cosy B&amp;B, or a country cottage, plenty of options suit your style.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With breathtaking scenery, fantastic food and wine, and plenty of outdoor adventures, the Macedon Ranges in autumn is an absolute dream. So grab your camera, wear a comfy sweater, and prepare for an unforgettable autumn escape!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Magpies are some of the most recognisable birds in Australia, famous for their intelligence, beautiful songs, and, let’s be honest, their occasional swooping! These black-and-white characters are often seen in backyards, parks, and even making friends with people. If you love having magpies around and want to give them a little treat, it’s important to know what’s good (and bad) for them to eat.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Magpies Are Super Smart!</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Magpies belong to the same bird family as crows and ravens, which means they’re incredibly intelligent. They can recognise human faces, remember people who are kind to them, and even figure out tricky puzzles. Some magpies have even been known to mimic human speech! With brains like that, it’s no wonder they’ve adapted so well to life alongside us.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-004-topaz-sharpen-denoise-1024x683.jpg" alt="magpies" class="wp-image-16823" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-004-topaz-sharpen-denoise-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-004-topaz-sharpen-denoise-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-004-topaz-sharpen-denoise-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-004-topaz-sharpen-denoise-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-004-topaz-sharpen-denoise-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-004-topaz-sharpen-denoise-1400x933.jpg 1400w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-004-topaz-sharpen-denoise-800x533.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">What Do Magpies Eat in the Wild?</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Magpies aren’t fussy eaters—they’ll snack on just about anything they can find! Their natural diet includes:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Insects</strong> like beetles, grasshoppers, and caterpillars</li>

<li><strong>Small animals</strong> such as lizards and frogs</li>

<li><strong>Seeds and grains</strong></li>

<li><strong>Fruits and berries</strong></li>

<li><strong>Carrion (dead animals)</strong></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because they’re such great foragers, they don’t actually <em>need</em> to be fed by humans, but if you want to give them a little extra, it’s best to stick to healthy, natural foods.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">What’s Safe to Feed Magpies?</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you want to leave out some food for your feathered friends, ensure it’s something nutritious and good for them. Here are some of the best options:</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Good Foods for Magpies:</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">✅ <strong>Raw or lean cooked meat</strong> – A great protein boost, but don’t overdo it, and avoid anything salty. ✅ <strong>Cooked or raw eggs</strong> – Full of nutrients and easy to digest. ✅ <strong>Insects and mealworms</strong> – These mimic their natural diet and are a great snack. ✅ <strong>High-quality dog or cat food (meat-based, not grain-heavy)</strong> – If you’re out of other options, a little wet or soaked dry pet food can work. ✅ <strong>Unsalted nuts and seeds</strong> – Good for variety, but shouldn’t be their main food source. ✅ <strong>A little bit of cheese</strong> – Adds calcium, but only in small amounts.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Foods to Avoid:</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">❌ <strong>Bread and crackers</strong> – No real nutrients, just empty calories. ❌ <strong>Processed meats (like bacon, ham, and sausages)</strong> – Too salty and full of preservatives. ❌ <strong>Sugary or salty foods</strong> – Can upset their digestion. ❌ <strong>Avocado and chocolate</strong> – These are toxic to birds! ❌ <strong>Dairy (in large amounts)</strong> – Magpies aren’t built to digest lactose, so keep cheese minimal.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-390-topaz-sharpen-denoise-683x1024.jpg" alt="juvenile magpie" class="wp-image-16825" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-390-topaz-sharpen-denoise-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-390-topaz-sharpen-denoise-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-390-topaz-sharpen-denoise-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-390-topaz-sharpen-denoise-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-390-topaz-sharpen-denoise-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-390-topaz-sharpen-denoise-1400x2100.jpg 1400w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-390-topaz-sharpen-denoise-800x1200.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/McCrae-Weekend-390-topaz-sharpen-denoise-scaled.jpg 1707w" sizes="(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Juvenile Magpie</figcaption></figure>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Why Mince and Bread Aren’t Good for Magpies</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many people think feeding magpies <a href="https://www.mandurahwildlife.com.au/post/minced-meat-kills-magpies" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mince</a> or bread is a kind gesture, but these foods can actually harm them. Mince, especially if given in large amounts, lacks essential nutrients like calcium, which can lead to weak bones and poor health. It also contains too much phosphorus, which can interfere with calcium absorption. Bread, on the other hand, is just empty calories—filling but nutritionally useless. Birds that eat too much bread can become malnourished, as it replaces healthier food sources in their diet. If you want to help magpies thrive, it’s best to offer foods that mimic what they would eat in the wild.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Feeding Magpies the Right Way</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While feeding magpies can be a fun way to interact with them, it’s important to do it responsibly. Here are some tips to keep them happy and healthy:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Don’t overfeed</strong> – A little treat now and then is fine, but magpies should still find most of their food naturally.</li>

<li><strong>Stick to natural foods</strong> – The closer to their wild diet, the better!</li>

<li><strong>Give them water</strong> – A shallow dish of fresh water is super helpful, especially on hot days.</li>

<li><strong>Avoid hand-feeding</strong> – It might make them too reliant on humans or even aggressive.</li>

<li><strong>Enjoy from a distance</strong> – Magpies are amazing to watch, so observe without interfering too much.</li>
</ul>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Why Magpies Matter</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Magpies aren’t just fun to have around—they’re also important for the environment. They help control insect populations, clean up carrion, and even spread seeds. Their presence keeps nature in balance, so giving them a little support (without overdoing it) is a great way to appreciate their role in the ecosystem.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Final Thoughts</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Magpies are clever, cheeky, and full of personality. Feeding them can be a great way to connect with these amazing birds, as long as you do it the right way. By offering safe, nutritious food in moderation and respecting their wild instincts, you can enjoy their company without causing harm.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So next time you hear that iconic magpie warble, take a moment to admire these incredible birds and maybe even offer them a healthy snack!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lens ball photography, or crystal ball photography, is a fascinating technique that uses a transparent sphere to create unique and mesmerising images. The ball acts as a natural fisheye lens, capturing and inverting the surrounding scene in a small, crystal-clear world. This form of photography has gained popularity among landscape, street, and abstract photographers due to its ability to transform ordinary scenes into extraordinary works of art.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Understanding Lens Ball Photography</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The basic principle of lens ball photography revolves around refraction. Light enters the ball and bends, creating an upside-down version of the scene inside the sphere. This effect adds a unique perspective to photos, making the crystal ball the focal point while beautifully distorting and reframing the background.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="675" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/PC160022.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-16806" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/PC160022.jpg 900w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/PC160022-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/PC160022-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/PC160022-800x600.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While it may seem complex, mastering lens ball photography is simple with the right approach. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced photographer, using a lens ball can elevate your creativity and storytelling skills.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How to Do Lens Ball Photography</strong></h4>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Choose the Right Lens Ball</strong></h5>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Size Matters</strong>: Lens balls come in various sizes, typically from 60mm to 100mm in diameter. A 60-80mm ball is ideal for portability and ease of handling, while a 100mm ball provides a larger, more detailed view but is heavier.</li>

<li><strong>Quality</strong>: Opt for a high-quality, optically clear ball made of pure crystal to avoid imperfections and distortions.</li>

<li><strong>Weight Consideration</strong>: Larger balls can be cumbersome to carry and set up, so choose a size that suits your needs.</li>
</ul>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Selecting the Right Location</strong></h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lens ball photography works best in visually engaging environments. Popular choices include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Landscapes</strong>: Mountains, beaches, forests, and lakes create stunning reflections inside the ball.</li>

<li><strong>Cityscapes</strong>: Urban scenes, bridges, and architecture add a modern, artistic feel.</li>

<li><strong>Abstract Scenes</strong>: Experiment with lights, patterns, and objects to create surreal compositions.</li>
</ul>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Setting Up the Shot</strong></h5>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Placement</strong>: Position the ball on a stable surface like a rock, tree stump, or flat ground. You can also hold it in your hand for a more dynamic shot.</li>

<li><strong>Focus on the Ball</strong>: The lens ball should be the sharpest part of the image. Use autofocus or manual focus to ensure clarity.</li>

<li><strong>Aperture Settings</strong>: A low f-stop (e.g., f/2.8 to f/5.6) helps create a soft bokeh background, making the ball stand out.</li>

<li><strong>Camera Angle</strong>: Shoot slightly above the ball for a complete scenery reflection.</li>

<li><strong>Invert or Crop</strong>: Since the image inside the ball is upside down, you can rotate the image during post-processing or creatively frame your shot to work with the inversion.</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="683" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/PC160071R.jpg" alt="lens ball photography" class="wp-image-16807" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/PC160071R.jpg 900w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/PC160071R-300x228.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/PC160071R-768x583.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/PC160071R-800x607.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure>
</div>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Lighting Considerations</strong></h5>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Golden Hour</strong>: Early morning or late afternoon provides warm, soft lighting that enhances reflections.</li>

<li><strong>Avoid Harsh Sunlight</strong>: Direct sunlight can create glare and overexposure. Use diffused lighting for better balance. Lens balls work well with city lights, neon signs, and reflections, creating a futuristic effect.</li>
</ul>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Post-Processing Tips</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Editing your lens ball images can enhance their impact. Use software like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop to:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Invert the Image</strong>: Flip the scene inside the ball to make it upright if desired.</li>

<li><strong>Adjust Contrast and Clarity</strong>: Enhance details to make the ball&#8217;s reflection sharper.</li>

<li><strong>Crop Creatively</strong>: Frame your shot in a way that makes the ball the centre of attention.</li>

<li><strong>Remove Unwanted Reflections</strong>: Use healing tools to eliminate distractions.</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/D__3237-1024x683.jpg" alt="lens ball photography" class="wp-image-16808" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/D__3237-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/D__3237-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/D__3237-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/D__3237-800x534.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/D__3237.jpg 1382w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Safety Precautions in Lens Ball Photography</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While lens ball photography is exciting, there are safety concerns you should be aware of:</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Fire Hazard Warning</strong></h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lens balls can act as magnifying glasses, focusing sunlight into a concentrated beam that can ignite flammable surfaces. To avoid this:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Never leave a lens ball in direct sunlight for an extended period.</li>

<li>Do not place it on dry grass, wooden surfaces, or near paper.</li>

<li>Always store it in a cloth bag or pouch when not in use.</li>
</ul>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Handling and Storage</strong></h5>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Lens balls are fragile and prone to breaking if dropped. Always handle with care.</li>

<li>Store the ball in a soft pouch to prevent scratches and chips.</li>

<li>Avoid placing the ball on uneven surfaces where it can roll off.</li>
</ul>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Eye Safety</strong></h5>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Direct sunlight passing through the ball can create intense glare. Avoid looking directly through the ball towards the sun.</li>

<li>Be cautious when using a ball around reflective surfaces like mirrors or water.</li>
</ul>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Weather Considerations</strong></h5>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Cold Weather</strong>: Lens balls can crack in extremely cold temperatures. Keep them warm when shooting in winter conditions.</li>

<li><strong>Wet Conditions</strong>: Rain or seawater can leave spots or residue on the ball, affecting clarity. Use a microfiber cloth to keep it clean.</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="887" height="592" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_9149.jpg" alt="lens ball photography" class="wp-image-16809" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_9149.jpg 887w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_9149-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_9149-768x513.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_9149-800x534.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 887px) 100vw, 887px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/how-to-do-crystal-ball-photography/">Lens ball photography</a> is an engaging and rewarding technique that adds an artistic and surreal touch to your images. By understanding how refraction works, choosing the right ball, setting up your shots carefully, and following essential safety precautions, you can master this style and create breathtaking photographs.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether you are capturing vast landscapes, bustling cityscapes, or intricate abstract scenes, using a lens ball opens up endless creative possibilities. Just remember to handle it safely, protect it from extreme conditions, and, most importantly, have fun experimenting with new perspectives!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Victoria bursts to life each year with a sea of golden-yellow hues as sunflower season takes centre stage, drawing locals and tourists alike to its stunning, sun-kissed fields. Sunflower season is a much-anticipated event showcasing these towering blooms&#8217; beauty. It&#8217;s also a delightful experience to wander through fields filled with these iconic flowers.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">When is Sunflower Season in Victoria?</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sunflower season in Victoria typically runs from December through March, although blooming times can vary slightly depending on the region and weather conditions. Sunflowers thrive in warmer months, and the Australian summer provides ideal conditions for their growth. During this period, fields around the state come alive with vibrant blooms that can reach up to two meters in height, offering a truly mesmerising sight. To catch the flowers at their peak, aim to visit in January or early February, when the fields are usually in full bloom.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="731" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050004-1-1024x731.jpg" alt="sunflower season" class="wp-image-16638" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050004-1-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050004-1-300x214.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050004-1-768x548.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050004-1-770x550.jpg 770w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050004-1-800x571.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050004-1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Where to Find Sunflower Fields in Victoria</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While Victoria may not be as famous for sunflowers as Queensland or New South Wales, there are several locations where you can enjoy these radiant fields.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">1. <strong>Tatura and the Goulburn Valley Region</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Goulburn Valley region, known as Victoria&#8217;s fruit bowl, is one of the prime spots to experience sunflower fields. Located two hours north of Melbourne, Tatura and the surrounding areas are home to numerous farms that grow sunflowers commercially. Many of these farms open their fields to visitors during peak season, allowing you to stroll through the blooms and snap that perfect Instagram photo. This area also has numerous wineries and orchards, making it an ideal destination for a day trip filled with scenic beauty and delicious local produce.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">2. <strong>Yarra Valley</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Renowned for its wineries and vineyards, the Yarra Valley is also home to several sunflower fields during the summer. (<a href="https://girasoleyv.com/">Girasole</a> will open in 2025 for visitors). Some vineyards even plant sunflowers as a complementary crop, providing a unique combination of wine tasting and sunflower spotting. The Yarra Valley&#8217;s fields may be smaller than others in Australia, but its rolling hills and scenic vineyards make it an incredibly picturesque location. After a morning of sunflower viewing, you can spend the afternoon sampling local wines and enjoying the stunning natural surroundings.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050062-1-1024x768.jpg" alt="sunflower season" class="wp-image-16639" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050062-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050062-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050062-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050062-1-800x600.jpg 800w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/P2050062-1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">3. <strong>The Macedon Ranges</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Macedon Ranges, just an hour from Melbourne, is another fantastic spot to see sunflowers in bloom. Known for its cool-climate wines and lush landscapes, this region is a favourite for nature lovers. Some farms in the area plant sunflowers, and the cooler climate here makes it a unique location for sunflower photography. The region&#8217;s charming villages, such as Kyneton and Woodend, are also worth exploring, offering boutique shops, cosy cafés, and galleries that make for a well-rounded trip. <a href="https://www.sault.com.au/flower-fields/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sault</a> at Daylesford has both lavender and sunflower fields</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">4. <strong>Private Farms and Pop-Up Sunflower Fields</strong></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Across Victoria, private farms often grow sunflowers for commercial purposes, and some allow visitors to enjoy their fields during peak bloom times. Keep an eye out for local announcements, as these fields may be smaller pop-ups that open only for a limited time. Social media is an excellent tool for finding these lesser-known spots, as farmers often advertise on Instagram or Facebook when the fields are open for public visits. <a href="https://www.pickyourownsunflowers.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pick Your Own Sunflowers</a> at Dunnstown is always worth a visit</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Tips for Visiting Sunflower Fields in Victoria</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When visiting sunflower fields, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a great experience and respect the property and flowers:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Respect the Fields</strong><br>Sunflowers may look sturdy, but they are delicate plants. Be mindful of where you step and avoid trampling the flowers. Always follow the pathways provided by the farms, and remember that many sunflower fields are on private property. Respecting the farmers&#8217; efforts in cultivating these beautiful fields is essential.</li>

<li><strong>Wear Sun Protection</strong><br>Victoria&#8217;s summer can be intense, so wear sun protection when visiting. A wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses are essential, especially if you spend a few hours wandering the fields. The bright blooms and reflective soil can warm the fields, so staying hydrated is also key.</li>

<li><strong>Come Early or Late for the </strong>Best Lighting<br>To capture the best photos, visit the fields early in the morning or late in the afternoon. This is when the lighting is softer, reducing harsh shadows and enhancing the colours of the sunflowers. Many photographers find that the &#8220;golden hour&#8221; just after sunrise or before sunset provides the perfect natural light to make the sunflowers truly glow.</li>

<li><strong>Dress Comfortably and Consider Footwear</strong><br>While sunflower fields look magical, they&#8217;re still farm fields that can be dusty, muddy, or uneven. Opt for comfortable, sturdy footwear—ideally, something you don&#8217;t mind getting a little dirty. Light, airy clothing is also ideal for staying comfortable in the summer heat.</li>

<li><strong>Bring Your Camera and Get Creative</strong><br>Sunflowers are excellent subjects for photography, and there&#8217;s no shortage of creative ways to capture them. Experiment with different angles—shoot from below to make the flowers look even taller or focus on close-up shots of the flower heads to highlight their unique textures. Many sunflower fields even provide props, such as vintage bikes, picnic setups, or hay bales, to add a touch of charm to your photos.</li>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Sunflower Season Events and Workshops</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some regions in Victoria host special events and workshops during sunflower season, catering to both photography enthusiasts and casual visitors. These events may include guided tours of the fields, photography workshops, or even yoga sessions among the sunflowers. Check with local tourism boards and social media pages to see if any special events align with your visit.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Supporting Local Farmers</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many sunflower fields are grown by local farmers who rely on visitor contributions to maintain these stunning blooms. Some fields charge a small entry fee, while others sell sunflower-themed products or fresh-cut sunflowers. By visiting these fields and purchasing their products, you&#8217;re supporting the local agriculture community and helping to ensure that these gorgeous fields remain open to the public for years to come.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Sunflower Season: A Celebration of Nature&#8217;s Beauty</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Victoria&#8217;s sunflower season is a beautiful reminder of nature&#8217;s ability to bring joy and awe. Walking among sunflowers, watching them sway in the breeze, and enjoying the vast expanse of vibrant colours is a beautiful way to connect with the outdoors. Whether you&#8217;re visiting for photo opportunities, soaking in the beauty, or enjoying a unique summer experience, Victoria&#8217;s sunflower season offers something truly special.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nestled in the heart of Victoria, the picturesque town of Nagambie. The town is known for its serene lake, lush surroundings, and vibrant community spirit. However, in recent months, this tranquil town became the centre of a critical environmental struggle to save 51 mature trees from being cut down as part of a proposed development project. Some trees are hundreds of years old and were at risk of being removed to make way for a lifestyle village development near Buckley Park. The story has a happy ending thanks to the community action led by a <a inert="true" href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/51Trees" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">51 Trees</a> FB group.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="720" height="960" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/133708015_10224348675008612_2073144140708784219_n.jpg" alt="one of the 51 trees" class="wp-image-16696" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/133708015_10224348675008612_2073144140708784219_n.jpg 720w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/133708015_10224348675008612_2073144140708784219_n-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">one of the 51 trees (image supplies by 51 Trees)</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">The Importance of the 51 Trees</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 51 trees in question are not just random greenery; they are decades-old grey box giants that play a crucial role in the local ecosystem. Their canopies provide shade; their roots help stabilise the soil. They support biodiversity by offering birds, insects, and other wildlife habitats. From a climate perspective, these trees are vital carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) and releasing oxygen. In an era where climate change threatens ecosystems globally, preserving such natural assets is essential. Additionally, these trees enhance the aesthetic charm of <a href="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/nagambie-history-vineyards-and-waterways/">Nagambie</a>, attracting tourists and providing a serene backdrop for locals to relax and unwind.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="526" height="701" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/259344244_10224257398814699_5664206545437017428_n.jpg" alt="one of the 51 trees" class="wp-image-16697" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/259344244_10224257398814699_5664206545437017428_n.jpg 526w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/259344244_10224257398814699_5664206545437017428_n-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Image supplied by 51 trees group</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">The Threat</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plans for urban development, including new infrastructure and possible residential expansion, threatened these 51 trees. While progress and growth are essential for any town, the community argues that development should not come at the expense of irreplaceable natural heritage. Once the trees are cut down, their ecological benefits will disappear. Crucially, it could take decades for newly planted saplings to provide comparable value.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="862" height="575" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/d626238d4b39d7767dee1d0500212082.avif" alt="the 51 trees marked for removal" class="wp-image-16699" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/d626238d4b39d7767dee1d0500212082.avif 862w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/d626238d4b39d7767dee1d0500212082-300x200.avif 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/d626238d4b39d7767dee1d0500212082-768x512.avif 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/d626238d4b39d7767dee1d0500212082-800x534.avif 800w" sizes="(max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The trees marked for removal (image supplied by 51 Trees group)</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This conflict is not unique to Nagambie. Communities across Australia and the world face similar dilemmas, often pitting economic interests against environmental preservation. However, the situation in Nagambie highlights a broader question: Can development and nature coexist harmoniously?</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">The Community&#8217;s Fight</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nagambie residents, environmentalists, and supporters from neighbouring towns rallied to protect these trees. Moya Stewart and Deb Dudley founded the 51 Trees FB group to rally community support. They organised peaceful protests, initiated petition drives, and sold aprons, tea towels and wine at markets. They engaged with local authorities to explore alternatives to the proposed plans. The message is clear: cutting down these trees should be the last resort.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="960" height="720" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/269622911_5373351352691328_489490408246405183_n.jpg" alt="community rallied to fundraise and save the trees" class="wp-image-16700" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/269622911_5373351352691328_489490408246405183_n.jpg 960w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/269622911_5373351352691328_489490408246405183_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/269622911_5373351352691328_489490408246405183_n-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/269622911_5373351352691328_489490408246405183_n-800x600.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Fundraising selling aprons and tea towels (image by 51 trees group)</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children have created painted signs, seniors have shared stories of playing under the trees during their youth, and local artists have crafted works inspired by these natural wonders. Social media campaigns using hashtags like #SaveNagambieTrees have raised awareness of the issue, capturing attention nationwide. The community&#8217;s stance is not against development itself but rather for a more thoughtful approach. Many residents suggest that developers consider alternative designs, allowing the trees to coexist with new infrastructure. Such compromises would demonstrate that Nagambie values both progress and preservation.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="960" height="720" src="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/273832044_5571052716254523_6261169736996131572_n.jpg" alt="community rallied to fundraise and save the trees" class="wp-image-16701" srcset="https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/273832044_5571052716254523_6261169736996131572_n.jpg 960w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/273832044_5571052716254523_6261169736996131572_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/273832044_5571052716254523_6261169736996131572_n-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.bevleaross.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/273832044_5571052716254523_6261169736996131572_n-800x600.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px" /></figure>
</div>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">The Outcome</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The campaign to save Nagambie&#8217;s 51 grassy box woodland trees was ultimately successful. After nearly two years of protests and legal actions, the Victorian Planning Minister decided to preserve the trees. This decision highlights the significance of community action and environmental advocacy in shaping urban planning. Rhonda Richards played a significant role in the campaign to save the 51 trees in Nagambie. As an active Save 51 Trees group member and chair of the Longwood Plains Catchment Network, she worked alongside other community members and environmental organisations to oppose the removal of these historic trees. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Richards contributed to the community-driven effort by coordinating actions, raising awareness about the trees&#8217; environmental and cultural value, and advocating for their protection. This included participating in public objections, leveraging her network to gain support from local and regional environmental groups, and engaging in legal action through the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Ultimately, the campaign succeeded when the Victorian Planning Minister intervened to protect the trees. However, the developer, Hallmarc, can appeal the decision within a specified timeframe.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">You can still help</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The financial burden on those involved in saving the trees has been substantial, and they are still working to recover funds. You can help by purchasing a beautiful high quality calendar or attending the Eurora Twilight Market, where their products and other items are available for sale.</p>
